An Original Guide to Exploring the World for the Adventurous Black Traveler
Under The Brazilian Sun
by A. Brown
In Rio, you must visit the beaches. There are beautiful people of all different hues on the beach
all day.  On my last day in Rio, there was a group of military or police men training on the beach
in the morning sun. You have never seen such a lovely sight as light and dark brazilian men
exercising in the hot sun!

In Salvador de Bahia, I went to one of the cultural shows one evening
and it was a treat. They do capeoira demonstrations and the food is
delicious. I especially enjoyed a dish called moqueca(fish dish),it was so delicious that I brought
back the spices and made it the week I arrived back in the states.

This trip ranks in the top two of my favorite vacations.  Most of my travels have taken me to
Europe. As we know, Back travelers are really the minority of the tourists visiting these
countries.  My biggest cultural shock in Brazil, was finally vacationing and seeing natives who
looked like me. In fact I could be mistaken for a Brazilian. People would start speaking
Portugese to me because they didn’t know I wasn’t Brazilian.
While in Brazil I encountered no negative treatment. As an American of African descent, it was a
joy to be amongst the Brazilians. They are some of the kindest, most laid back people I have ever
met. They always seem to be in a good mood.  The treatment all the hotels and restaurants in both
cities was excellent. There was never an occasion when I felt I did not receive proper service due
to the color of my skin. Of course, since some Brazilian people are the same hue, no one would
really know, unless you spoke to them, that you were not Brazilian.

You often hear of violence in Brazil but I did not experience or see any mishaps.  There are some
places where homeless people hang out, especially at night, but I never really felt unsafe. The
children did harass me for money, especially once they found out I was from the US, but you
could politely send them on their way, or if a Brazilian saw them they would tell them to stop
harassing you.

I have definitely put Brazil on my "must return to" list. I would love to go back during Carnival
time.  My only advice for other travelers is to definitely visit this beautiful country, for the
beauty in it’s landscape and within it’s inhabitants.
