An Original Guide to Exploring the World for the Adventurous Black Traveler
Welcoming in the New year in Montreal
Stephanie Muse
Year round, Montreal has something exciting to offer for first time visitors or experienced travelers.  My first trip to
Montreal was New Year’s Day 2003.  I wanted to ring in the New Year in a new destination and Montreal sounded
perfect.  With only 1.5 hours from Washington, D.C., I decided to grab a couple of my girlfriends and we were set.
Being from the Midwest, I’m use to the cold, but Montreal in the winter brings a whole new level of being frigid.
However, this should not halt your trip in the winter months.  The cold weather yields itself to explore the numerous
cafes and indoor sites One café that I return often to is Brioche Lyonnaise (1593 rue St-Denis Quartier Latin).  Here,
you can get steaming bowl of café au lait and savory/sweet crepe for under 10.00 Canadian dollars.

The wide streets and hills within Montreal are great for exploration on foot.  Make sure that you take stroll in Vieux
Montreal and Rue Shorebrook for sites and shopping.  Be sure to visit Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Montreal (Our Lady
of Montreal Basilica) for beautiful neo-gothic architecture (116 rue Notre-Dame Ouest) and Centre d’Histoire de
Montreal to see the history of French decedents in Montreal.  (333 pl. d’Youvill metro Place d’Arms or Victoria
Square).  Also, of great interest is learning about the freed and escaped slaves in the United States that resettled in
Montreal.

I’m always looking for great places to catch a meal that is delicious, hearty, and won’t break my bank.  La Commensal
(various locations) is a local chain in Montreal, but the variety of dishes and salads will make a meat eater forget that
they are eating at vegetarian establishment.

In my travels to Montreal I’ve rested my head in different hotels, but my preference is to stay is at a Bed & Breakfast.
I recommend Le Simone   (
http://www.lesimone.com/) for it’s affordability and close proximity to the Berri-Quam
metro station and also the bus terminal.  Additionally, Roc your host is a wealth of information!
